House training a puppy, is the process of teaching the little dog to live inside the house, following the house rules at all times. This training is essential, since over 90% of the dogs live inside the house. This type of training is not difficult and tedious, but it will require some patience and time on your side to make a lasting change in the behavior of the puppy. Training a puppy has many advantages, given that the dog is easier to train during the early months of their life.
When house training your puppy, you will need a dog crate to make things easier. This dog crate must be used whenever you can”t take a look at the puppy(when you are absent or during at night) and will prevent the puppy from exploring other places to do his necessities. Choose a crate big enough for your puppy, so he can defecate on one end and sleep on the other.
Then you need to establish a routine. Keep a routine to take him outside and coordinate with the feeding schedule. Puppies may need to go outside more frequently so keep that in mind. With a leash, you should take the puppy to the bathroom spot, and after he is done, associate this with petting and playing. You can also “embed” a command to your dog while he is defecating. For example you could say “go poop”. In the future, every time you say that, the dog will associate the bathroom spot.
Finally, keep in mind the vital step of praising your puppy when he eliminates on the designated area. Treats work just fine and what will you be doing here, is reinforcing the correct behavior, so with enough repetition, your puppy won”t want to go to other place than the designated area.
