Teaching Your Dog to Sit
Teaching your dog to sit is another one of the five basic commands of dog obedience. This command will instruct your dog or puppy to sit on the floor. This is one of the easiest-to-teach commands, since dogs are constantly seating. As trainers or owners it is our mission to link that natural behavior to a command. Here’’s a pretty easy way to each your dog to sit:
- Grab a treat and holding it in your hand, call your dog to grab his attention.
- Now, hold the treat above the nose of your dog and say the command “Sit!”. You should use a firm tone and speak very clear.
- Move the hand with the treat toward the ears of your dog. This will cause your dog to sit.
- When your dog’’s rear hits the ground, say a little phrase to praise him and give him the treat. Try to keep all things positive when he performs the action you want, this way all pleasant feelings will be linked to the behavior.
- Repeat 4-5 times in a session.
As you see, teaching your dog is pretty easy. There are other methods that can help you in teaching your dog to sit. One of them is the clicker dog training method, which involves the use of a clicker to link the behavior quicker than with words.
Which method is better? There isn”t really a bullet-proof method, you should invest time with just one and help your dog make the necessary associations.
If you notice your dog isn”t sitting, do not yell, punish or force them. Just breathe, keep things positive and observe your pet. Every time the dog sits naturally, say something with “sit” and then praise the dog. Don”t forget to practice with consistency to have the expected results. Repetition is key.
