  • Teaching Your Dog To Come

Teaching a dog to come when they are called is one of the basic steps on dog obedience training.  It is also, one of the most important commands your dog can learn as it can help us the owners warn our dogs about any potential hazard.  It is also the first step towards giving more freedom to the dog.  Once he has learned the come command, you won”t need the leash to get him by your side.

This important skill can be somewhat difficult to teach as dogs will need to prefer going next to you instead of running free.  But hey, it IS possible with a good training technique, repetition, patience and consistent training sessions.

First you need to know what can be a motivation for your dog, in this case a treat works great, so go ahead and buy your dog is preferred treat!  Next you need to get him used to the command.  Some people like to say “Come!” While others prefer to say the dog’’s name.  Either way, use just one command to avoid confusing your dog.

Call your dog, and if he comes to you, reward him with a treat.  This is very important since the dog needs to associate the pleasant feeling with the behavior you requested of them. Repeat this exercise until your dog comes at short distances.  Once you feel comfortable, bring him to an open area like a park and practice calling him from longer distances.

At the start it is always recommended to choose an environment with minimal distractions like objects or sounds.  Your training sessions should be consistent until your dog fully learns the command; however, avoid over training your dog, keep the sessions short and fun.
