  • Dog Training Techniques

With all the centuries we humans have been training dogs, one can find many dog training techniques.  However, some of them have been proven least effective than others in the long run, and now we can find of techniques that really work.  There are basically two groups of theories: one group that is based on learning theories and the second one that is based on the natural behavior of dogs.

The dog training techniques based on theories, use reinforcement (positive or negative) and punishment as a way to change behavior on dogs.  Inside this group you can find three types of techniques: traditional dog training (where negative reinforcement and punishment are important); positive dog training (they don”t use punishment at all, one example is clicker dock training); and mixed training techniques (as the name implies they use both negative and positive reinforcements depending on the case).

On the other hand, the techniques based on the dog’’s natural behavior are based on the idea that the dog owner must be the alpha male of the pack.  Since these techniques ignore learning theory; they establish the way dogs usually group - in packs, and suggest taking action according to that fact. Despite this, this does not seem to influence the use of violence during training; this is something that depends entirely on particular methods used by trainers and dog owners.

So, which of these techniques is better? It really depends on your point of view.  There is a lot of debate regarding the methods used to train a dog.  We personally think that a dog is a friend and we should use methods that don”t hurt them in any way.  Some people think that this does not provide enough education, but the truth is different, it may only require an extra bit of patience and care.
