So, ready to teach your dog something new? Here is a good idea that you might want to consider… Teach him/her to heel. Heeling is when your dog walks to your left, with his head beside your left heel, whenever ordered to.  This solves problems about your dog wandering off, keeps your dog from running ahead, keeps him/her from running in the street, and promotes another healthy step you can take to communicating what you want from your best friend.

Now, to teach heeling, you are going to need a choke chain collar.  You cannot just use any old chain, it must be an actual dog training choke chain collar. Once you put the collar on him, try walking around a little bit, holding him on your left side.  When he tries to run ahead, stray away, etc, he will find that he cannot.  He will also find that stressing the matter results in the choke chain tightening.  He will not like this, and resume his place beside you.  Remember not to yank or pull the chain, just lead him with it. Make sure he understands that when he stays close to you, it will not tighten. Soon, he will catch on, and will never try to stray off. Remember to praise your dog whenever he does a good job.

Give him a treat when he is especially good, and don’t forget that your dog LIVES to make you happy.  So be patient, kind, and consistent, and you will find that your dog can learn a lot faster than you may have thought.

This has been a good introduction to heeling.  When your dog realizes that the choke chain won’t hurt, and realizes what it is for, he is ready to begin learning how to respond to the “heel” command. Some people prefer to have their dogs trained by professional trainers. Places like “About Time Dog Training” in Denver, Colorado are often a good place to start.
