  • Dog Basic Obedience Training

Well, first off, congratulations on owning a great dog who you deem worthy to spend the time and resources on to train. And I can honestly tell you, it is well worth the time it takes. However, you may be wondering, how do I go about training my dog?

Dog basic obedience training begins as a state of mind.  Long before you teach your dog to sit, stay, etc, you need to understand something about your dog.  You see, a dog has natural instincts.  Being an animal, it is your dogs instinct to chew on the couch, to bark all night, to wet the carpet, to climb up on company… All of these things are things that your dog will do instinctively.  He/she needs to do them, as he/she is a dog.

    The Talk

Basic obedience training, to put it simply, is teaching your dog to release this energy in domestically acceptable ways.  For example, your dog should bark at strangers, not  just because he/she feels like it. Your dog should use the bathroom, but they should do it outside.  Your dog should run and jump, but to catch a ball at the beach… NOT to catch your grandpa as he exits his vehicle when they come over for Christmas dinner.  So, what does this mean to you and your dog?

Basic obedience training is about opening the lines of communication.  It is about you and your dog communicating with one another, and him/her understanding what is acceptable and what is not.  Opting to train your dog is better for you because you won”t have to be embarrassed by your dog, and you won”t have to lock him/her in the bedroom when company is over.  And, it is better for your dog, because of continuous confusing chastisement, your dog gets the love and respect he/she deserves.
