Dog Leash Training
Dog leash training is a basic dog training activity that can help you quickly establish a better communication with your dog and create stronger bonds. It is also a way to enter the World of dog obedience training, and can give you an advantage when you decide to take a dog obedience training class or buy a book.
Dog leash training is best when you start on the early days of your pet (it is not required though) It begins by buying good comfortable collar that does no harm to your dog and learning how to put it correctly (not too tight, not too loose). Your dog must grow accustomed to wearing the leash, so walk with your dog, let him walk by himself with the leash, let him eat with the leash and play with him. You must not build negative associations. When you leave the dog alone, you need to take out the leash. It can be very dangerous to do so.
In some days, your dog won’t even feel any discomfort wearing the collar and leash.
Now you need to train your dog to walk with you. The perfect walk is the one that doesn’t not pull you or falls behind. It is key to keep total control and dominance to let your dog know you are the master. If you feel the dog is pulling you, stop. Don’t keep walking until you feel the dog lets go the tension on the leash. Ideally your dog should walk at your side, not ahead of you.
Patience is a critical component with dog training. Avoid punishing or yelling at your dog - they don’t really know what they are doing. It is your job to teach your dog good behavior. If you have trouble with dog leash training by yourself, you can find more information about dog schools and obedience classes in your area.
