  • Crate Training a Puppy

    Dog crates are wonderful aids to help us train our puppy, it is in no way a cage or a place of punishment.  Instead, it is a spot that your puppy easily recognizes as a “den” and will make things easier for potty training. Dogs naturally choose dens such as a crate to sleep and eat, they will feel safe and protected, and at the same time you”ll keep the puppy safe when you are not around.  Let’’s learn a bit more about crate training a puppy.

    One important thing to understand is that a dog never treats the den badly, this means he will try to keep it clean and tidy - it is his instinct.  This fact will play at your advantage when it comes to potty training.

    With crate training, is very important so set a schedule.  Establish the feeding hours with anticipation, and you”ll be able to more or less predict when the puppy needs to eliminate. Observing your little dog is very important; you have to train yourself as well to see when your puppy needs to go potty. As you become better, you will be able to take your puppy to a designated area to teach him.

    Puppies will need to go do their necessities more often than grown dogs, keep that in mind.  When it is time to sleep, lead the puppy to the crate, and when he wakes up take him outside so he can eliminate.

    Although a crate is great when the puppy I s alone or at night, never leave him inside for more than 10 hours.  They need to go outside too, so if you work long hours make the necessary arrangements in your life to give some time and space to the dog.
