  • How to Keep Dog From Jumping on People

Getting the dog to jump on you -the owner - every time you arrive can be a great experience.  After all, your dog is showing his love and how much he missed you on your absence.  However you may have problems when the dog starts jumping everyone on every occasion.  There are many people who get freaked when a dog jumps at them, or they simply don”t like.  It is important then to learn how to keep a dog from jumping on people.

Through the decades, many methods have been tried. Some are certainly not recommended, specially the ones that inflict damage to the poor animal. While others are simply ineffective and can in fact end up reinforcing the habit. So how do you keep your do from jumping on people?

One of the simple ways to do it is to gently grab his tow front paws while putting them down on the floor, while saying “no!” with confidence. Of course, this won”t work at the first few tries, so you”ll need to keep repeating to reinforce the habit.  Pet him as a reward for his good behavior and with enough time, he”ll be much more controlled.

There is also another dog training method, but you need to be careful, and that is raising your knee gently, so your dog comes to your knee instead of your body.  This way the dog will lower down.  I”ve found this method to be not so effective like the mentioned before, but it can be of help with big dogs.  DO NOT KICK the animal or knee the dog, as you can potentially cause heavy injury like broken ribs.

While teaching him this behavior, also spend time with your dog, give him the attention he deserves, and if you can enroll in some dog obedience classes or read a dog obedience book that will help you have more control over your dog.
