How to Keep a Dog from Digging Under the Fence
Dog’s dig for a number of different reasons. Some dig to play, some dig to escape, some dig out of instinct, and some even dig for attention. However, as annoying as your dog’s digging habits are, trust me, he is not digging just to annoy you. So, if you are wondering how to keep your dog from digging under the fence, it is crucial to first learn why he is digging in the first place.
Most of the time, dogs dig for entertainment’s sake. Does your dog dig into the ground, and chase the dirt? There could be several reasons you dog is digging for entertainment. But usually it comes down to the obvious. Your dog is just plain BORED. What to do? Schedule some walks for you and your pet, so he can expel this energy in other ways. Make sure he has enough toys to keep him busy, and make sure you make time in your day to go play with your dog. A dog left alone and to itself will find ways to entertain itself, just as a human would.
Another reason your dog may be digging is because he is chasing something. Often times bugs and/or little animals like moles or lizards will run down tiny holes into the ground, and your dog’s instincts tell him to “give chase”. You can correct this problem by making your yard more insect and pest proof.
And then, some dogs dig holes so they can lay in the nice cool dirt on a hot day. To avoid this, make sure your dog has a nice, cool, insulated dog house to lay in. If your dog still digs, than maybe provide your dog with an “acceptable” digging area, and make sure your dog has plenty of water in a bowl that cannot be knocked over.
