  • Stop Dog Chewing

    Chewing is a common behavior of dogs, however for the dog owners; it can be one of the most annoying one.  Not only it bothers us when the dog starts chewing our things, but it also makes us spend a lot of money buying and repairing stuff.  Even worse, chewing can be very dangerous, there are countless cases of dogs biting electric wires and poisonous objects!

    Dogs chew anything the can, but every dog develops a special “love” for some things. However, don’t feel despaired; you can learn how to stop dog chewing.

    To attack the problem, one must first know the causes.  In this case, dog chewing may be triggered by a type of fear or phobia, loneliness (chewing gives attention to the dog), boredom, anxiety. This behavior is also normal when your puppy starts teething.

    Now you know the causes, so to stop dog chewing, you’ll see that getting angry at the dog will not be of much help.  They don’t do things to bother you, and there’s no way they know they are chewing expensive stuff!  Here are a few tips that will help your dog stop chewing everything:

    -          Keep your dog occupied and happy.  A great way to do it is by teaching him dog obedience.

    -          Give your dog something he CAN chew. There are thousands of chewable toys for dogs.  Through repetition let them know that they are the only thing they can chew, specially when teething.

    -          Don’t let it become a habit. Don’t put things aside for tomorrow, if you catch your dog chewing something, this may be the start of a nasty habit. If you are going to leave him alone, a crate or a special place can be useful to keep him from reinforcing the habit.

    -          Practice obedience training to let him know you are the master, and that he must be obedient to your commands.  This will eliminate much of the struggling of teaching to stop dog chewing.
