  • Excessive Barking

Excessive barking is one of the most annoying things a dog can do.  Not only for the owner, but it can also lead to problems with neighbors, especially if you live in a crowded area with little children and elderly people. For dogs, barking isn”t annoying, it is just one of the ways they have to communicate using sounds.

There are different types of barking, each one with a different tone.  It is important that you as a dog owner learn how to recognize the different types of bark and teach your dog how to end excessive barking of every type for good.

One of the types of barking is to warn you against any potential danger. These is indeed very helpful to you, but teach your dog to only bark once.  As soon as you notice this type of bark, cut the second barking with another activity.  Dog obedience training is great in these cases where your dog needs to do what he is told.

Some other times dog bark to request something. I”ve found they do this when they are anxious knowing that a walk or a meal is coming soon.  If this is your case, don”t give the dog what he wants or else you”ll reinforce the behavior. Instead, wait until he is calmed down, and reinforce the GOOD habit with a toy or a cookie.

If your dog barks out of boredom, it is because they feel lonely and want some attention.  This is a sign you need to spend more time giving love to your dog. If you work all day, you should buy something for your dog that lets them play when you are not there.  A chewable toy works great.

As you see, excessive barking can be controlled with a little effort on your part, remember that reinforcing your dog’’s good behavior through repetition is a key factor to develop good behavior.
